Debi Ryan: Chalkboard Card

I've been keen to try a Chalkboard card for a while now, I've used a handful of stamps from Relish Reading and Bits and Pieces.
Easy to achieve, I used a white ink pad and pencil on black cardstock. To make it a bit for feminine I added lace and bling.

Hope you're enjoying a good week.

Barbara Washington: Scraplings

Help! I can't stop. I did not know what a scrapling was until this months RRD challenge. I decided to make one for my post today, and before I knew it, I had four done. It was so much fun. I had to stop so I could write my post.
Stamps from Nature's Notes

Stamps from Relish Reading, Just Sayin' and Behind the  Scenes

Stamps from Beach Babes

Stamps from Just Sayin' Nature Notes, and Behind the Scenes
This month's challenge is Slender Benders: Moos and Scraplings. I completed these four scraplings before I decided I had to stop. Moos and Scraplings are tiny canvases which you can use to create art. [Moo (1 1/8" x 2 3/4" and Scrapling (1 1/2" x 4 1/4" folded)]. Join in the challenge before July 7, 2013. Add your work to the challenge linky for a chance to win a $15 voucher to the RRD store.

I used stamps from Beach BabesBehind the ScenesJust Sayin:, Nature Notes, and Relish Reading in my samples.

Don't Forget the Rogue Redhead Designs Super Sale before it comes to an end. All unmounted stamp plates are on sale in the RRD store until June 21, 2013.

Simple Set Saturday: Straight Without Rules

I am addicted to the simple repetition in design. I love the look of images or shapes in a nice neat row. The problem I face is that I despise having to pull out my ruler or a stamp positioner every time I want to do this same simple look with a “clean and simple” style card. One-layer cards are even more arduous and it is definitely more noticeable when things are out of alignment. To avoid doing too much math and tangling with my ruler on a regular basis, I devised this simple method to ensure nice straight lines with ease.

Stamps: Cosmos from Floriculture and sentiment from Bits and Pieces

The main “tools” for achieving this look are lined re-positionable notes. The lines come in handy over and over. My battered but well-used stamp mat also has a printed grid pattern that constantly proves useful. Combine both of these items with some cling-mounted rubber stamps and a good acrylic block with a grid and your days of measuring may be over. You just need to line things up and stamp away!

The key to this style of card is to leave lots of open space on the card. With this simple masking method, you can still have lots of pop and pizzazz while leaving the majority of the card clean!

Tip 1: When working on one-layer clean and simple cards, remember to keep clean and simple yourself! Wash your hands regularly as stray ink inevitably finds its way onto all that fabulous white space.

Tip 2: Inexpensive cotton balls are wonderful for sponging. Their inconsistent texture allows for a variety of looks. I love all the unpredictable streaking and fun look when pounced.

Supplies Used:
  • White or light cardstock
  • 3 complimentary colors of ink (Ranger Distress Ink – Summer Set)
  • 1 black or dark ink (Tuxedo Black Memento Ink)
  • 3 sponges, daubers or cotton balls
  • lined re-positionable notes
  • square punch
  • a stamp mat with a grid pattern or graph paper
  • acrylic block(s) with grid lines

Step 1:
To begin, I gathered my supplies on my stamp mat. If your stamp mat does not have a grid pattern, you can also use graph paper. I then cut my cardstock to form a simple card base. For my inks, I selected the Summer Set of Ranger Distress Ink colors – Picked Raspberry, Mowed Lawn and Salty Ocean.

Step 2:
To create a nice vertical line from which to line up my trio of squares, I used the grid on my mat to line up one re-positionable note. I then used the lines on the note and the mat grid to place a second re-positionable note. Lining up the lines on the note helps me to keep everything straight. Note: now your card is also securely attached to your mat.

Step 3:
Next, it is time to make the mask. On a third re-positionable note, align your square punch with one of the ruled-lines to keep your shape straight and punch. Move your punch over to put a little distance between the two shapes and punch again, lining up the punch as before. I always use my punch upside down so that I can easily see what I am punching.

Step 4:
Align the edge of your mask note with those already laid down. Here, I generally use the grid pattern on the mat to help me put one of the squares as close to the middle of my card as possible. Once, I have the mask set, I used my cotton ball to sponge ink into the square openings. I always sponge toward the middle of the opening to avoid any ink sneaking under the mask.  Keeping the hot color in the middle, I sponged Mowed Lawn into the uppermost square and the Picked Raspberry into the middle square.

Step 5:
Now, here’s the important trick. I life the mask and turn it 180 degrees and reposition the middle square back over the pink sponged square. I now have the mask lined up for the third square and can ink in my final square with Salty Ocean Distress Ink. When the mask is removed, I have 3 nicely aligned squares of colour.

Step 6:
I again used repetition to complete the card. To create more interest, I varied how the my chosen image – a cosmos bud from the Floriculture plate - was stamped but ensured that the bud was always within the inked squares.

This technique can be varied to create different looks. By placing the mask higher on the card, you can allow images to fall outside your sponged squares.

For this card, I was careful to practice on scrap paper to check the position of the children before stamping onto my lovely sponged squares. I discovered that my square was slightly too small, so I used a slightly larger square punch and created a new mask.

Stamps: Swingers and sentiment from Relish Reading
For a more “contained” look, after I had sponged my squares, I masked the middle square so I could stamp an image directly onto the upper square mask.

I repeated with the other two squares. Using the grid on my acrylic block, I could ensure that the inked image fell consistently onto each square by lining the grid up with the corner of the square mask. I also pounced the cotton ball onto the masks to create a slightly different look for my inked squares.

Stamps: Sally from Relish Reading and sentiment from Bits and Pieces

Finally, you can create a slightly different effect by positioning the mask diagonally to start.

Move the mat at a 45 degree angle, re-aligning the mask over the lowest square.

The result is a tremendous triangle with a lovely space for a special sentiment.

For this card, I offset my image, a geometric flower from Just Sayin', to give a feeling of movement to the card.

I hope you have fun with this super easy technique!

The Craft Room is Going Rogue

Once again, RRD is having fun with our Craft Room friends and sponsoring their most recent challenge.

The delightful designers at The Craft Room are asking us to create something with the theme - In the Library.   They are looking for things such as books, stamps of books, mini books, altered books, pages from books, text, and script.

Our own Helene Huber is a guest artist for this challenge!  Isn't her sample fabulous?

Helene is a master of creating enchanting scenes by putting together lovely layers!  With this card, she has used her Relish Reading set to furnish us with a cozy scene with one reader enjoying her novel inside and two younger readers who can't seem to put their book down even outside! She has also added text aspects with the handwriting background from Behind the Scenes.   Find out more details on Helene's blog.

Of course, Rogue Crewer Debi Ryan is a full-time design team member over at the Craft Room. This week, she has created an altered book for her sample and it is totally delightful!

Debi has also turned to the Relish Reading plate for her mixed media piece!  Her cover shows our own Meagan reading in the garden.  Don't you just love all the amazing dimensional details that Debi has added!

Inside her book, Debi has created a delightful niche featuring our dear swinging children in a frame of flowers!  The soft colors and fabulous design keep bring you back to find even more detail.

To find out more about how Debi put this lovely piece together, check out her blog.

This two-week challenge will run until April 14th.  As you can see, there's a Rogue Redhead plate as a prize for the randomly drawn winner.

Why not play along?

Colleen Oxford: Relish Holder

It's snowing again!!!
Yes, New England has woken to another white fluffy morning.

So I really wanted to create something with Warm Bright colors.
One's that we will hopefully be seeing soon :)

I started out with a plastic drink mix container.
Rogue Redhead's Relish Reading and Behind the Scenes stamp plates.
Stampin' Up's Tango Tangerine, Pacific Point and Real Red inks.

I cut a piece of flexible white paper and stamped the bubble wrap background stamp from Behind the Scenes using the stamp off technique to give some depth. Then I used the 2 book stamps from Relish Reading and randomly stamped around.

I then adhered the white paper around the container and glued some ribbon to the bottom.
On a separate piece of white paper I stamped the girl holding the book from Relish Reading, colored her in and stamped the sentiment on top. Finishing by cutting the image out, popping it up, adhering red flowers around the image and adding a few pearls.

Barbara Washington: Books

This month the Rebel Challenge is sentimental focus. I chose one of the sentiments from Relish Reading. The adorable image of the two children is also from that set. Since I wanted to focus on the image and the sentiment, I chose a very simple background. A band of color sets off the look of the card. I used Pan Pastels for the color and stamped the image in black for dramatic effect.
Why don't you join in the challenge before April 7, 2013 for a chance to win a $15.00 Voucher to the RRD store!

trisha too: a sentimental atc? maybe . . .

Well, okay, no, it's not sentimental in the traditional sense of the word,
but in keeping with the latest Rebel Challenge, the focus of this atc
is, in fact, on the sentiment:

The background papers are mono prints, but I added stamps from the
Behind the Scenes plate for added depth.  And the sentiment is from
the Relish Reading plate--makes sense, right?

(Wanna know a lil' secret?  I didn't leave the atc like this . . . if you want
to see the rest of the story, you can come take a peek HERE.)

Barbara Washington: Two Amusements

I decided to create a tag for my post today. Actually, I had used a tag for picking up extra distress stain from my non-stick mat. I really liked how it had turned out, so I decided to use it for this piece. I stamped the tag with the bubblewrap stamp from the new Behind the Scenes stamp set. I added a harlequin die cut along the right side of the tag. I stamped the boy from Relish Reading and cut him out. His jacket and hat were paper-pieced. The sentiment is also from Relish Reading. The tag ribbon is made from tissue tape. (a Tim Holtz idea) It was a quick and easy tag to make, but I think it turned out great.

Sharon Briss: CAS Cats Two Ways

Using the same basic premise, I created two different but similar cards with some simple masking.

I started with a vague notion of a cat sitting on a wall, so I stamped my fav cat from the Just Sayin' plate onto the card with Tuxedo Black Memento ink and then masked off the cat and a section of card to become "the wall".  Once I had the section masked off, I sponged on some Antique Linen distress ink (Ranger).   Over that I stamped my sequin waste background from Behind the Scenes with the same ink.  I finished with my handwritten music background from the same collection, stamped using Vintage Photo distress ink.

Once this strip was completed, I removed the masks and colored the cat in with copic markers.  I stamped the sentiment, "Did You Hear" also from the Just Sayin' plate with Tuxedo Black Memento ink.

Stamps: cat and sentiment from Just Sayin'; sequin waste and
handwritten music background from Behind the Scenes (Rogue Redhead Designs)

Don't ya love how his little tail dips into the "wall" of ink ever so slightly.

On the next card, I wanted to give the cat a different look so I stamped him on some cool textured patterned paper and paper pieced the image.  For the band of color, I sponged with Spun Sugar Distress ink and then overstamped the bubble wrap background from Behind the Scenes.  I then switched to Victorian Velvet distress ink and stamped the Handwriting background, also from Behind the Scenes, onto the color strip.  I added a little more color by adding some sponging Victorian Velvet along the masking line for some depth.  To finish, I added the layered flower and stamped the sentiment, Miss You from Relish Reading, onto the color band.

handwritten music background from Behind the Scenes (Rogue Redhead Designs)
I love this easy format and the quick way these cards went together.  While exactly the same design, I think they both have their own personality!

Behind the Scenes is a versatile collection that will quickly become one of your go-to sets.  As you see with the two cards above, it's already become one of mine!  I love the different ways you can layer the various backgrounds to create fabulous effects!  Behind the Scenes will be on sale for its introductory price of $17.60 only until the end of March!

Don't forget!  There's only a one day left to take advantage of the old postage rates.  As of February 15th, all our postal rates will reflect the changes implemented by the USPS in late January.

Colleen Oxford: Background Treats

Hey everyone :)
Love, Flowers and Chocolates are in the air
and I have a special treat for you.

I live in a house FULL of testosterone and try to sneak pinks in everywhere.  Which was my intent when making their Valentine treats, but Antique is where my heart led me.  So without further ado...

Stamps: Handwriting background and Kids swinging from Behind the Scenes and Reading Relish

I'm going to share my process:
I started with cello bags from Stampin' Up - 5in x 11 1/2in.
I put about 5-6 pieces of chocolates in each

I then cut SU's Baroque Blue cardstock into a 5 x 11 piece and scored as shown.

I stamped the Handwriting background from RRD's newest set Behind the Scenes all over using the stamping off technique also to give some depth. Then I smudged all around the edges, remembering to smudge the bottom of the front.

I cut out an oval close to the edge of the bottom using Creative Memories cutting system.

I Love these two, such a cute stamp from Reading Relish.  I stamped the image onto canvas badges from Close to my Heart, and inked around the edges. Fold the bags down and staple closed.

Finally adding pearls and lace from SU as the finishing touches.

I hope everyone has a great (and Loving) Valentine's Day
XOXO

Simple Set Saturdays: Vintage Valentines

We're celebrating Valentine's Day on our Simple Set Saturday this month! I generally do not make traditional valentines and this year is no exception. I've gone quite simple using only standard cardstock, glossy paper and watercolor paper. I kept the color palette simple - 2 shades of pink and 3 shades of brown. Layering a backgrounds, one waterstamped and the other traditionally stamped gave teh backgrounds a lovely depth and complexity of texture.  I did not use any cupids or hearts and instead relied on vintage images and romantic sentiments.

To keep the required time to create these nice and tight, I organized my tasks. I started by cutting the glossy paper into 4 panels measuring 4.0" x 5.25". For the next step, I did each panel individually as I did not want the ink to by too dry. I used a direct-to-paper inking technique with some Victorian Velvet Distress Ink on the glossy panel and smoothed out the result with a cotton ball. I choose my first backgound and spritzed it with water. I pressed it onto the distress inked glossy panel and then removed the stamp. A lovely inverse of the background stamp appeared. I repeated this procedure with the other three panels, choosing a different background stamp each time. I set these aside to dry a bit.

You can see in this first card the layered background.  For this card, I waterstamped the Bubble Wrap background from the new Behind the Scenes collection and overstamped with the Sandy Beach background from Beach Babes.  The boat and sentiment are also from Beach Babes.

Stamps: boat, sentiment  and Sandy Beach background from Beach Babes;

Here you can see a detail of the two texture backgrounds layered together.

My next step was to stamp my desired vintage images onto the watercolor paper. I used Timber Brown StazOn ink so that I could immediately start watercoloring them with an aquabrush and my distress inks. I wanted to keep a minimal color palette so I chose to use the Victorian Velvet again with Spun Sugar, Tea Dye and Vintage Photo. The last two colors remain on my craft table as go-to colors. I usually stamp the inks I want to watercolor with onto an acrylic block so that I can pick them up easily and I don't damage my ink pads.

You can see on this next card that I kept the watercoloring merely a hint of color.  I just wanted to give some dimension to the images.  For this card, I had waterstamped my Handwritten background (Behind the Scenes)  and overstamped with the Handwritten Music from the same set.  The couple is from Just Sayin' and the sentiment is from Snow Hugs.

Stamps: old couple from Just Sayin', sentiment from Snow Hugs;
Bubble Wrap background from Behind the Scenes (Rogue Redhead Designs)

While my first round of painted ink was drying, I overstamped my second background images onto each of my four glossy panels using Victorian Velvet again. As the direct-to-paper and sponging had laid a light hue of color on the panels, the full strength version of the ink gave wonderful contrast.

The background below is the inverse of the one above.  I waterstamped the Handwritten Music and then overstamped the Handwriting background.

From here, I added a second layer of detail to my watercolored images. I like to let them dry and then apply my next layer of ink to give a little shading without having to use additional colors.

You can see the extra shading on my third card.  I used Dot and one of the sentiments from Milliner Misses.  To cut down the whiteness of the watercolor paper, I used a soft wash of Spun Sugar around the image.

Stamps: Dot and sentiment from Milliner Misses; Handwriting and Handwritten Music
backgrounds from Behind the Scenes (Rogue Redhead Designs)

To finish off the cards, I cut 4 card bases from burgundy cardstock. I used an additional sheet of cardstock to mat my images which I had cut into ovals and circles. When matting my images, I offset my images slightly for a little different look.

I especially liked the look for my final card, a simple floral valentine.  To create this card, I had waterstamped the Sequin Waste background (Behind the Scenes) and added the Almanac background from Relish Reading overtop.

For my images, I chose the cosmos blossom and "Je t'aime" from Floriculture and added very minimal color.

Stamps: Cosmos blossom and sentiment from Floriculture; Handwriting and Handwritten Music
backgrounds from Behind the Scenes (Rogue Redhead Designs)

Once assembled, I really liked the unified color and look. Hope you do as well!
